The number of students with some type of disability in Brazilian Higher Education between 2010 and 2019, increased by 144.83%. However, they do not correspond to less than 1% of the total enrollment in undergraduate courses in the country. The data derived from the Higher Education Census 2019, released by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research (Inep), which reveals a situation that still requires attention.

In the case of master’s courses, the limitations end up being even greater, given that most universities do not offer subsidies and the necessary apparatus to serve these students who seek to expand their qualifications.

Giulianna Carbonari, director of marketing and admissions at MUST University – An American university that offers master’s courses 100% online in three languages: Portuguese, Spanish and English –comments on the value of including these people in the master’s program: “It’s a way of increasing equality, since now everyone has the same opportunities in the labor market”.

Despite advances in legislation, there is still no detail on how to promote access to classes for students with some type of disability. Therefore, the  importance of receptivity by educational institutions.

Professor Roberta Marcilio, master and pedagogue, specialized in the psychology of learning development and tutor in the Master in Emerging Technologies in Education at MUST University, has already taught five students with disabilities at the university.

Roberta says that one student in particular, who had lost her hearing due to a serious illness, became a teacher for people with disabilities. “In addition to being a great student, she also became a competent teacher, with several articles published”.

Sidney Zamboni, who is studying a Masters in Emerging Technologies of Education, is visually impaired, and says it was not easy to find an accessible course. “I confess that I did not have high expectations of achieving advanced studies. With a lot of struggle, I conquered a much-desired higher education. I was looking for other continuing education opportunities, and despite many people discouraging me, through many contacts with universities, I finally found MUST, which provided me with equal accessibility and offered everyone great commitment. I am very happy to have reached such an important professional level and fulfilled my dream of completing my masters degree”, he says.

For Arnaldo Lino, who has a hearing impairment, the master’s degree at MUST University will enable him to fulfill a great desire: to use what he learned during the course to create projects in favor of deaf people who want to expand their knowledge. “I would like everyone to have more access to technologies and to gain more autonomy and independence to progress and advance in their careers. For example a QR code, which opens a window with an interpreter explaining the contents in sign language. I would be very happy to contribute to this type of project”, the MUST student says.

MUST University has increasingly sought accessibility to ensure the learning of students with some type of disability and, although it is not yet fully prepared for everyone’s adaptation, it continues the efforts to support these students. Because of this, it has used technological resources to make classes more accessible, such as video recordings of classes with translation into sign language, among other tools.
